You may have noticed colorful markings labeled “811” scattered throughout our community from time to time, and we want to take a moment to explain their significance. These markings are not done by Highlands Fiber Network but are part of a standard practice followed for any construction project involving underground utility infrastructure.

The “811” markings indicate the presence of underground utility infrastructure, such as power lines, gas pipes, water mains, and communication cables. They play a vital role in safeguarding the integrity of our infrastructure and ensuring the safety of our community.

Before commencing any underground construction or excavation work, it is crucial to notify the local utility companies about the project. The responsible party must contact their local 811 service, a nationwide call center, to initiate the utility locating process.

Upon receiving the notification, the 811 service will coordinate with the relevant utility companies in the area. Representatives from each utility company will then visit the construction site and mark the locations of their underground facilities using specific color codes or symbols. These markings provide valuable guidance to avoid damaging the utilities during construction or excavation.

The color codes used for marking vary depending on the utility type. For instance, red may indicate electric power lines, yellow for gas pipes, blue for water mains, and orange for communication cables. These color-coded markings enable workers and construction crews to proceed with caution and prevent accidental damage.

Typically, these markings are performed and maintained by the utility companies themselves or contracted professionals.

Why are these markings essential?

Prevention of Accidental Damage

By clearly identifying the location of underground utilities, the markings prevent accidental damage during construction or excavation work, ensuring service reliability and safety.

Coordination and Collaboration

Utility companies send representatives to mark the locations of their underground facilities, promoting collaboration and awareness among all parties involved in the construction process.

Community Safety

The markings create a safer environment for construction workers and the public by preventing accidents and injuries related to underground utilities.

You may see these markings around the Issaquah Highlands in areas of construction and where HFN is conducting infrastructure upgrades. If you have any questions or require further information, our customer service team is always here to assist you.
